Quitman Elementary School has proudly named Holden Staten as its Teacher of the Year, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of education and his unwavering dedication to his students. Staten, who has been a beacon of inspiration within Brooks County Schools for three years, currently teaches Visual Arts to students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Staten’s educational journey is as impressive as his teaching career. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Valdosta State University and an ESOL Endorsement from Middle Georgia RESA. In December 2024, he will add a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in Accomplished Teaching with a Reading Endorsement from Valdosta State University to his credentials.
Despite his relatively short tenure, Staten has made a significant impact on his students and colleagues. He attributes his success to the strong support system he has found at Quitman Elementary. "At this moment, the support I have from my friends, coworkers, and administration is the most rewarding aspect of teaching," Staten shared. "They are very encouraging for the Art we create and a helpful guide for keeping my head up on the rough days. Seeing my students understand and apply an Art technique is pretty amazing. Seeing their reaction to what they created is everything."
One of the biggest challenges Staten faces in his role is time constraints. With only forty-five minutes per class each week, he often finds it difficult to have meaningful conversations and complete intricate art projects. However, his positive attitude and resourcefulness help him make the most of every minute. "Like most teachers, I work with what I am given and appreciate the time that I do have with them," he said.
Staten’s favorite teaching memory harks back to his first year, during a particularly messy but memorable clay unit with his fifth graders. "We had clay all over the tables, ourselves, and even the walls to be honest," he recalled. "However, I knew it was a success when I saw my students' faces when we drank out of the coiled mugs we created, all smiles! I knew at that moment that even though we went through all of that mess, it was totally worth it."
His passion for teaching and the arts was sparked during his high school years, despite the limited art program at his school. An influential English teacher, Mrs. Analiese Hamm, who also ran the Drama Club, inspired Staten to pursue a creative path. "She let me be on the costume and set design team. From there, she inspired me to be creative and use the resources we do have," Staten reminisced. This foundation in the arts and the encouragement he received played a crucial role in his decision to become a teacher.
Outside the classroom, Staten enjoys a variety of hobbies that include reading sci-fi and thriller books, visiting new coffee shops, hiking, and spending time with his close-knit group of friends. Family remains an important part of his life, with supportive parents Kelby and Jennifer Staten and sisters Ciera Staten and Aimee Herring.
Holden Staten’s commitment to his students and his innovative approach to art education make him a deserving recipient of the Teacher of the Year award. His story is a testament to the impact a dedicated teacher can have on a school community, inspiring both students and colleagues alike.
Mr. Staten will represent Quitman Elementary School for the 24-25 school year and will compete at the district level for the title of Brooks County School District’s Teacher of the Year. The BCSD Teacher of the Year will be named at the Teacher of the Year banquet hosted in the fall.
