Dr. Chris Chastain, Principal of Brooks County High School, is proud to announce that Darious Dennard has been named Teacher of the Year for his outstanding contributions to education and his unwavering dedication to his students. With a career spanning eight years, five of which have been devoted to the Brooks County School District, Dennard has made a significant impact as a Physical Education and Health teacher.
Dennard's academic journey began at Valdosta State University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education. His passion for sports and education led him to further his studies at Georgia Southern University, obtaining a Master's degree in Sports Management. Dennard returned to Valdosta State to achieve a Specialist degree in Coaching Pedagogy, a testament to his commitment to enhancing his teaching methodologies and his dedication to student development.
Combining his extensive academic background with practical experience, Dennard is known for his innovative approach to teaching. He acknowledges the challenges of merging traditional teaching methods with the evolving needs of today's society. "Finding ways to merge my experiences and how things were taught when I was in school with today's society and what will be most beneficial for my students is the most challenging aspect of teaching," Dennard explains. Despite these challenges, his passion for education remains undeterred.
For Dennard, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the relationships he builds with his students and the opportunity to guide them through life. "I love watching students grow and come out of their 'shell' throughout the year. It's always rewarding to see," he shares, highlighting the personal connections that make teaching a fulfilling career.
One of Dennard's most cherished memories is seeing his students gain confidence and develop their skills over time. He believes that every student has the potential to achieve greatness, regardless of their athletic abilities, a philosophy inspired by his high school mentor, Coach Jonathan Roddy of Dodge County Middle School. Coach Roddy's compassionate and individualized approach left a lasting impression on Dennard, shaping his own teaching style.
Initially pursuing a career in sports medicine, Dennard discovered his true calling in education after realizing that he preferred the interactive and impactful nature of teaching over dealing with the medical aspects of sports injuries. "I love giving back knowledge to the younger generations and being around sports," he says. This realization, coupled with the influence of Coach Roddy, set him on the path to becoming a beloved educator.
Outside the classroom, Dennard enjoys a variety of hobbies that keep him engaged and active. He is a skilled barber, enjoys gaming, traveling, and has a knack for assembling things. His wife, Shajuantae Dennard, supports him in all his endeavors, providing a strong foundation as he continues to inspire and educate the students of Brooks County High School.
Darious Dennard's dedication to his students and his innovative approach to teaching have earned him the prestigious title of Teacher of the Year at Brooks County High School. His journey from a prospective sports medicine professional to an influential educator is a testament to his adaptability, passion, and unwavering commitment to student success. As he continues to shape the minds and lives of his students, Dennard exemplifies the true spirit of education, leaving a lasting legacy in the Brooks County community.
Dennard will represent Brooks County High School for the 2024-2025 school year and will compete for the Brooks County School District Teacher of the Year will be announced in the fall at the annual Teacher of the Year banquet.
