Martinez to represent ELC as TOTY

Principal Derrick Jenkins of the Early Learning Center recently announced that Erica Martinez was selected as the ELC Teacher of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year.  Ms. Martinez graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelors degree in Spanish and is currently enrolled in the Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy program at Wiregrass Technical College.  Currently serving as a PreK lead teacher, she has been employed with Brooks County Schools for eight years.

“Ms. Martinez is an eager and willing educator.  She acknowledges areas where she needs additional support, yet she has been willing to take on additional roles or tasks to meet the needs of not only her students but the entire school.  Ms. Martinez has a unique way of connecting with her students, which allows for higher levels of engagement during instructional time as well as filling their thirst for learning” stated Principal Jenkins.

Differentiating each day to meet all of her students’ unique needs is a challenge. Martinez shared, “ Seeing my students' faces light up when they understand a new skill is the most rewarding aspect of teaching”. Originally having a career goal of being an interpreter, Martinez realized how much she enjoyed working with students.  “I chose to stay in education because I want to continue helping students grow and learn.” said Martinez.

Ms. Martinez is the daughter of Juana Rodriguez. When not working with her energetic class of 4 year olds, she enjoys reading, watching true crime shows, and taking road trips.  She will represent the Early Learning Center for the 2023-2024 school year as Teacher of the Year and will compete at the district level for the title of Brooks County Schools Teacher of the Year. The BCS Teacher of the Year will compete at the state level for the title of Georgia Teacher of the Year. The BCS Teacher of the Year will be named at the Teacher of the Year banquet hosted in the fall.
